How to create the Perfect Blowout

The next step in creating the perfect blowout is prepping the hair. I like to start with the Redken Cleansing Cream Shampoo to remove oil and buildup from the hair. I follow that with a second shampoo using Redken’s Volume Injection to start volumizing the hair. Next, I use a lightweight conditioner such as the Redken All Soft to add softness to the hair without weighing it down. Before adding any styling products to the hair, make sure the hair is towel dried very well so that the products are absorbed better.
My favorite products to use for a blowout include a heat protectant, volume product, smoothing product, and finishing spray. These products are key for creating bounce, smoothness, and shine in your blowout. After detangling your hair using your favorite leave-in conditioner, spray a blow-dry primer such as Redken’s Quick Blow throughout the hair. Quick Blow is a heat protectant and speeds up the blow dry. Next, apply your volumizing product such as the Redken Big Blowout Jelly, the Pureology Instant Levitation Mist, or the Pureology Weightless Volume Mousse. These are great for creating a foundation for a bouncy blowout. Then apply a smoothing product such as the Pureology Shine Bright Taming Serum to insure your blowout is shiny and smooth. Always make sure to thoroughly comb through your hair to make sure every strand is fully coated.
The tools you use are also very important. Always make sure you’re using a blow dryer with a nozzle attachment so that you can focus your airflow down the hair shaft. Round brushes are also a great tool to create volume, shine, and smoothness in your blowout. Touching up your blowout with your flat iron or curling iron is a great way to make it last for days.
Okay, so you have the right haircut, products, and tools... so what now? Here is my foolproof method for the perfect blowout that you can create at home. After applying your products, begin by rough drying your hair. When rough drying, you want to focus on getting your hair at least 80% dry. After rough drying, section your hair using clips. I typically start in the nape area and continue working my way up the hair. The sections you take should not be bigger than the size of the brush you are using to insure you are getting all of the hair dry. Using your round brush, lift the hair vertically from the scalp to create the most volume. Once you create volume at the root, you can angle your brush downwards to create smoothness. It is important to double-check check the nozzle of your blowdryer is following your brush down the hair. This seals down the cuticle which eliminates frizz and creates shine. Continue this process until your hair is completely dry. Touch up any frizz using a flat iron or curling iron. If you don’t feel the need to use additional heat, use a serum such as the Pureology Shine Bright Taming Serum or the Redken Oil for all. Once your blowout is complete, follow it with a finishing spray such as the Pureology Soft Finish Hairspray to lock your style in place.
